Gluten intolerance is also a cause of constipation. Gluten intolerance is, quite simply, your body being unable to break down gluten. Ironically, in some cases gluten intolerance can cause diarrhea instead of constipation.
The severity of gluten intolerance may vary. Some people simply have gluten sensitivity and are completely unaware of it, although the symptoms do show more quickly for children. Some people have what is known as Celiac disease, which is a clinically verifiable version of gluten intolerance.
If you have severe abdominal pain, this should be a warning sign that your problem may be more than just simply constipation and you should visit your doctor to see if gluten intolerance may be the cause of your constipation.
If you are constipated, as was mentioned above, then it is quite likely that your diet is lacking in fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products and you need to make an effort to eat these, as well as get daily exercise of some kind. Even a 15-20 minute walk will help greatly.
Anything made from white flour will cause constipation, as will white rice. Junk food should be seriously cut back as sugar will also cause serious constipation.
Milk and cheese are two other foods that are known to cause constipation or make it worse if you already have it. While these two foods are healthy, some people, particularly those who are lactose intolerant, cannot handle them well.
Keep in mind, however, that if eating the right foods and exercising does not help, or if you have other symptoms, then you should see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
